Birth Debriefing
Process difficult and traumatic feelings after the birth of your baby
"A woman, as long as she lives, will remember how she was made to feel at her birth.”
- Anna Verwaal
Birth Debriefing In Canberra
The quote above by Anna Verwal is absolutely correct; just ask any woman how she feels when she recalls her children’s births. Even a grandmother will remember how she felt on the day of her children's births.
Disempowered. Traumatised. Empowered. Overjoyed. Numb. Scared. Happy.
Women's experiences are varied and unique.
However, the importance of birth debriefing is clear: today, as many as one-third of women describe their birth as traumatic.
Up to 6% of these women go on to develop Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) or Post-Partum Traumatic Stress Disorder (PPTSD). In addition, suicide is a leading cause of death in new mothers.
Unfortunately, these unacceptably high numbers are going up, not down. Birth trauma debriefing is critical to the healing process.
Below is a story that aired on the ABC about healing from birth trauma.
How Does Debriefing Help?
Debriefing your birth experiences helps you to process your birth(s) and hopefully reach a place of peace and acceptance. This is especially important if you’re planning to have more children, as the feelings around previous labours tend to come into play during future pregnancies.
I also encourage women who’ve had positive birth experiences to debrief and unpack their births. Each birth is as individual and honoured as the baby that is born. Being fully seen, heard and held as you tell your story can be incredibly healing.
How Much Are The Sessions?
Debrief sessions normally last for 2 hours. Usually, just one session is required.
Current fees for debriefing are $150.00 per session.
